What? I can't hear you! Why?
Montreal has long been a safe haven for artists and creatives to express themselves through music and sound. From live shows at local bars, to comedy clubs, to DIY rave scenes, the city is teeming with talent and expression, giving the city its unique personality.
Montreal is a highly mixed-use city with many residential spaces directly above commercial spaces. This quality creates a unique culture of highly localized nightlife not frequently found in most North American cities. Due to the racking up of noise-complaint related fines and with the rising cost of living, many Montreal staples have had to close permanently. Not only are these fines resulting in the closure of popular venues such as La Tulipe but also silencing many underground/subversive spaces that are staples in radical "DIY" communities.
This website is a collection of real events, court cases, and bylaw changes to bring awareness and clarity to the link between gentrification, the loss of community and incite change.
This project is not intended to be anti-neighbor. Rather, it aims to level the power imbalance between nightlife and power-of-complaint to open a conversation and hopefully bring peace to both the venue workers as well as those residing nextdoor.
